Its true Phil that we should "trust our own ears", but we often do not have the luxury to listen to all or even a small sample of the equipment that is out there.
We have to take in other opinions and weigh them against what we have heard and experienced. That is the reason why we spend time in forums like this one, along with listening for ourselves. I do agree that we should not "fully" trust anyone's opinion. The extent that we trust a review has to do with how that reviewers experiences have been supported by other opinions as well as our own. Some "trust" is usually warranted, to the extent that a reviewer has explained why he/she has reached the conclusions about a particular piece of gear. Many different factors have to be taken into account.
