Yes, all sample-rate conversion involves compromises, especially if
done in real time. Some converters are measureably superior to others.

http://src.infinitewave.ca/ has tests of many software sample rate
converters, including SOX 14.2.0. The conversion used for this test is
from 96kHz to 44.1 kHz, the opposite of what you're interested in, but
the FAQ says "At other sampling rates SRCs may behave differently.
However in many cases they actually behave similarly."

No measurements of hardware sample rate converters are included, but I,
along with Phil and others, think the RCS 2.2X sounds better with 96kHz
input than 44.1kHz. I'm currently using a GW Labs DSP between my SB3 and
RCS to convert to 96kHz.

And, in anticipation of receiving the always-next-month Touch, I'm also
doing offline upsampling of everything to 96/24 using iZotope 64-bit
SRC, one of the best according to the posted measurements (compare it
with SOX at the infinitewave site) and recommendation from a
discriminating recording engineer in another group.

I have not tried the SOX upsampling since my SB3 can only pass 48/24.

Regards,
Kim
