Didn't over look a thing. If one is only going to use a Squeezebox as a source, then I and many others don't think a Pre-amp is needed if the speakers are efficient enough and the amp has enough gain. Many amps actual have too much gain and a set of fixed or variable attenuators needs to be installed between the Squeezebox and amp so that the speakers are protected in case the Squeezebox turns on at 100% volume. It is easy to test what one needs. Set the volume to zero and verify it with the WebUI also. Pick a loud track and slowly increase the Squeezebox volume. If you can't reach 100% without it being to loud for your listening taste or approaching speaker damage, then you need attenuators to protect your speakers. My cousin in Philly drives his tube amp with a Transporter's Balanced Outs without the need of any attenuators or setting the internal ones that the Transporter has. The amp doesn't have enough gain to hurt his Thiel CS 3.7 speakers if the TP volume were set to 100%. WARNING: Most SS amps have more then enough gain to ruin your speakers at 100% Squeezebox volume. I have a set of 5, 10, and 20 dB RCA Bullet attenuators. I use them to demo amps here at the house with just my TP, demo amp, and Vandersteen Speakers. If I didn't share my HT room with my Listening Room, I probably wouldn't have a pre-amp. My VTL Pre-amp sounds great and has HT pass-through so my mains are part of the HT 7.3 surround sound. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive ------------------------------------------------------------------------ iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79496 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
