Yes it's a plan based on various competent and maturing async USB DACs
cropping up here and there. Yes it depends on how each DAC is
implemented - but all things being equal - the async method seems to be
the way to go by having the DAC act as the master.

JJZolx - A netbook should be quiet enough for you - even when the fan
is on you can hardly hear it. However you are best to keep the fan off
to remove yet another source of possible electromagnetic interference.
The Dell netbooks are fan-less - and many netbooks don't use their fans
when not under stress. Not necessarily more expensive than a SB either -
I bought mine for £130 brand new from a Car Phone Warehouse sale. Yes
adding a DAC means more expense - but I would add an audiophile DAC on
the end of a SB anyway so it ends up being cheaper for me in that
respect.

Yes perhaps I am making it a tad geeky - but perhaps this is somewhat
off-set by using a UI as easy as J.River - and putting this geeky
effort in may indeed reward with better sound quality.

And Maggior - in response to 'Playing music over the network through PC
hardware connected to a stereo system is so 10 years ago' - yes it
possibly is - but whether the aging effect - 10, 20 or 30 years ago -
it may still 'sound' better even though the implementation is not
"modern". My goal is sound quality above, perhaps, ultra-convenience
and ultra-modern - which won't suit everyone.
