The reason vinyl disappeared from the mainstream audio reproduction lies precisely in your description above. To reach wider audience, music reproduction ought to be much simpler than that. Enter digital audio. No fuss, no muss, no brainer. Read: massive success, massive adoption rate (iPod + iTunes). Now we're at the verge of reintroducing high quality audio into the masses via products such as Touch.
