Many of you posting here and who claim that jitter is inaudible seem to
have very good audio equipment (especially other than the digital
source). I can only guess it is possible, that the DACs you all use have
good jitter suppression. It is also possible that the speakers are very
good, you are so impressed with the sound and any subtle changes
introduced by jitter are not audible. It is also possible that you
probably do not understand jitter (compared to analog electrical issues)
that you deny you need to address that issue. I dont know... (or have
you heard from friends with lesser priced gear that you are wasting
money on these things and their system is good enough and they do not
hear or think that the qualitative difference is worth the price ?)
In my case, 15 years, I thought digital cables do not matter and was
running with a cheap toslink and then one day by accident happened to
use a different electrical SPDIF cable and noticed an improvement. That
started my learning of the way SPDIF works and understanding of Jitter.
Even though I mention jitter as an issue in digital playback, I dont
think I will ever buy those expensive gear like from dCS etc. I do have
a reality check. Yes, we should compare products with some form of
testing. As I mentioned earlier, sites like audiogon are good for me,
because I tend to have two or three pieces of gear of the same type and
I then sell off ones that I dont think that is making an improvement.
Also note, high end gear have good power supplies in them, that is the
reason, things like power conditioners are not needed or do not make a
difference. Somebody mentioned racks do not contribute to the sound that
much or have effect only on tube gear. They do have effects on the
digital gear (because of the oscillator/clock) and to some extent even
on solid state gear. But then, it is all in the design not in the price
of the rack and again I will never part with that much money for racks.
My used NewForm Research speaker came with no spikes, once I put the
spikes on it, it was much better. Same story for the subwoofer or the
vibrapod cones under my cd/dvd/player.
I know the SBT has good jitter performance. But you should try tweaks
like an external power supply or the Touch Toolbox software
modifications objectively. It is quite possible, you do not need a
multi-kilobuck DAC if you address jitter.
If your system is very good/excellent, where do you think further
improvements can come from ?
(thanks to the person who provided that link on the debate about jitter
on whatsbestforum)
