In this special case, you distribute a patch-only release. While
this may be OK for people compiling their own kernels, it makes
life for packagers harder.

Furthermore, the tarball has no clear version number. This also
creates problems for packagers.

Also I generally advise everyone to use a SCM for everything they
code, and provide releases in form of tarballs.

Compared with CVS, tarball-only releases may be "much superior"
(as Linus said), but it is also better to have a SCM as well (
whereas git is the fastest of all). And a decentralized is really
the best.

The answer is "commit often, commit early, release once a
week". You also have very cool bisect features, which makes it
very easy to locate problems.

Therefore, please do not stop to provide normal releases, or
adapt a completely new release scheme, including releases with
source trees.
