Freak crashes take toll
Cameron Smith
09mar04

ONE man is dead and four others are lucky to be alive after two aerial
crashes near Bendigo yesterday.

Both were described as freak accidents, occurring less than an hour apart
and 70km from each other.
Police yesterday praised a pilot who they say saved his wife and two
grandchildren.

The four cheated death when their single-engine Piper aircraft flipped
during an emergency landing seconds after taking off from Bendigo aerodrome
at 2.30pm.

The pilot, of Riddells Creek, tried to land the plane when he realised it
had lost power.

The plane clipped a tree, ripping off the left wing, before crashing about
200m from the tarmac.

Emergency crews rushed to find the pilot and his grandson, about 10, helping
the other two from the cabin.

The grandmother suffered damage to her back; the girl, about 11, suffered
minor abdominal injuries. Grandfather and grandson were treated for shock.
All four were taken to Bendigo Base Hospital for observation.

Aviation authorities said they were yet to speak to the pilot.

But police praised him, saying his actions saved the family, who were lucky
to escape relatively unharmed.

An hour later, a glider pilot was killed instantly when he was forced to
make a crash landing at Tandarra, near Inglewood.

The pilot, in his 50s and from the Bendigo area, was taking part in a
gliding event between Boort and Raywood when he crashed into a paddock along
the Bendigo-Yarraberb Rd. He was a member of the Bendigo Gliding Club, based
at Raywood.

A fellow pilot flying alongside saw the accident and is helping police and
aviation authorities. It is believed the family of the dead pilot were
following on the ground and were quickly on the scene.

On the ABC radio news bulletin at 4pm there was an item about a light
aircraft accident at Bendigo airport and at the end it was mentioned that a
man died in a glider sccident in the same area today.
