Stop using Microsoft products!
Advocate in all forums where computers are used for the adoption of *public* standards for data exchange.
Mozilla rocks and it's free. http://www.mozilla.org (Konqueror is good too, though I prefer Mozilla)
Use Mozilla for browsing the web, check out it's tabbed browsing, you should download it for that feature alone. Anytime you come across a site that only works with iexplorer or advocates it send them an e-mail rocket. Then send the site url to the standards promotion list on the mozilla site, you'll find it under;
Web Development / Evangelism "Discuss how to use and promote web standards with Mozilla"
Mozilla also does e-mail better than outlook and has excellent Junk mail filtering that learns what you consider to be junk and what is your regular content "one man's spam is another mans ham".
Install the mozilla calendar as well if you need that.
Firefox is the next generation of Mozilla and it also rocks.
Chuck that USB adsl modem and buy an Ethernet Modem configured to SNAT or "Masquerade" your PC from it's private address to the internet.
Install linux on that old PC you are about to chuck out and use iptables to really firewall your network.
And finally,
subscribe to an appropriate mailing list to discuss this sort of stuff, I'd recommend any Linux/Unix list. Whilst most of the material may initally go over at FL600, you'd be surprise at how much these guys know and how helpful they are.
