Not that it is any of your business or even relevant to the
discussion here, but I spent a total of 7 years in the tertiary
education system, two of them on staff.

er... the union already existed, membership was made non compulsory,
people voted with their wallets. The union wasn't perceived as
supplying value for money.
It is called the market. Get used to it. The alternatives mostly
involve threatening people with violence in one form or another.

"subsidised books" . Where does the subsidy come from? Union fees or
other income made by the union(aas a result of fees). If someone gets
a subsidy, somebody else is missing out and getting nothing for their money.
I guess this is a "right wing libertarian viewpoint"
