Even though your'e quite right Tom, don't be too tough on Mike, he has a good right wing/libertarian rant going (again). Pointing out he has no idea what he is talking about in terms of Uni's and unions is a waste of time. Mikes view seems to be the facts whilst interesting are irrelevant. When confronted with statements like Mike's On Slashdot they say "Don't feed the troll"-that might be appropriate. So here I go feeding the troll!
Mike has to have a go at unions, after all employers would never exploit people would they? They wouldn't be greedy or dishonest would they? Wantonly put toxic chemicals into the environment? (10 year olds in coal mines, Bhopal, Enron, AWB anyone) The right wing of politics and its blustering propagandist's whom Mike so ably represents here have for years campaigned, along with a press dominated by right wing owners and editors to demonise unions, and have largely succeeded amongst the uninformed. Mike how would going your way to flying gliders save me (NO PPL) Money? It wouldn't-oh what a surprise. I am no fan of the GFA myself, and this is Mike's pet subject, neatly of course, as usual ignoring the fact that most glider pilots don't have a PPL and see no relevance to us in flying under CASA. So Mike how do you get a check flight? At what cost? How much does your form 2 cost at LAME rates? Tell me again how this is cheaper/better than the GFA for the average (non PPL) glider pilot? It would cost me 5-10 years or more of my gliding budget to get a PPL at current rates. If a student union can't convince people to join without coercion it has no business being. You go to uni to do a course, get a degree. Having the uni administration refuse to give you the degree you've earned because you won't join the union is thuggery of the first order. The so called "services" provided by student unions are available in the real world and that includes sporting and special interest clubs. Might even get students more firmly grounded in the real world.
