I've just finished uni last year - I've had several years of compulsory union fees, and 6 months under VSU. In my experience VSU has had an overwhelmingly positive effect. With compulsory fees the union had no incentive to work hard for its members - it could take member fees for granted. As soon as VSU came in the union was forced to appear relevant to students. It opened more shops to raise funds which are very popular. The bar is still doing great business. Despite all the scare tactics virtually everyone I knew at uni was happy to see the end of compulsory union fees. Talking to friends of mine still at uni, it seems that a return to compulsory student unionism would be _very_ unpopular. Cheers, Al Tom
