Afternoon, I have my doubts that a constant light is easier to see than a flashing one. But I am not an expert so maybe they are.
But I would be surprised (happily, but none the less surprised) if LEDs are the answer. Not only would the brightest of the super bright LEDs not really be bright enough to see, but their current draw is also quit high. High powered ones are about 4-5 watts per LED - that is almost as much as your radio on transmit. Now compared to other incandescent or halogens that is quite small, but still too much for a glider. Think about a flash gun. The light from that is very bright for a very very short moment of time (1/100th of a second or less) and yet it can run on 4 AA batteries for 1000s of flashes. Now I am not saying a flash gun is the answer, but compare this with LEDs. In my estimation some form of strobe is going to be the answer due to power constraints. The question is - is a much brighter flash better than a duller constant light. I think probably.
