A valid point Michael.

I have a current and valid driver's licence endorsed for three categories of motor vehicle. I hereby declare that I had no _formal_ training whatsoever for this 49 years ago when I first obtained same. Since that time I have driven on public roads on all states and NZ variously with cars, utilities, 4wds, trucks, tractors, self propelled harvesters, fire appliances, winches and other assorted vehicles, often towing trailers with a long list of miscellaneous cargo from gliders and furniture through to four difference species of assorted livestock. I still ride both motor and pedal cycles with serious intent.

I have had no formal training for any of this stuff. I suspect that I am not alone. On the other hand I'm very comfortable with the training I received when I first started gliding 44 years ago, and the ongoing training and mentoring process which is part of gliding in my/our club environment today. No, it's not perfect, but there were and continue to be a lot of dedicated people doing their best to make it so, and I'm grateful for all their efforts in this direction.

Regards,
Terry
