Actually Gus there is software that model flight and attitude changes
...... think condor and others.

 

If some one is known to be able to make duff traces they would not be
banned from entering in comps, really think about it , now think some more
about it.

 

What Scott is saying there is the added protection in the falsification
process... the Official Observer.

 

If in a comp the O.O was looking over your shoulder as you loaded your
task and declared it, He un plugs it, he install's it in the glider and
seals the cables with tape and markings photographes it  with his camera ,
you fly the task, as you finish your rollout he verifies  the tape and
markings and then photo graphs it again, then he removes it for down load
and submittal for scoring.

 

With the official process adhered to no falsification can occur.

 

The only time some one could falsify logs at a comp is if the pilot could
walk away with the logger unattended for a period of say 5 hours then
reappear with it for scoring.

 

Mind you you would need a freekin big carload of gear to fiddle with the
file.

 

What the gliding community has got wrong and why many people leave as it
is a recreation activity for them, not everyone wants to do 1000km flights
some don't even want to any of the certificates or badges, and some like
me cant be bothered submitting their IGC files for badges,  Yes sure doing
goal flights is something to aim for, but its not for everyone.

 

If i ever decide to fly in a state comp, and i'm known as a "file hack",
then have 10 Official Observers for me, have a chase plane following me
throughout the entire task, at the end of the day if i do the task
successfully then the IGC log should have no problem with the scorer of
the day. As a matter of fact stick a separate logger someone else owns in
the deep guts of my Cirrus, the 2 loggers will say the same thing.

 

Really i have shown it is possible to create duff files, what i have not
and will not ever do is submit one for a claim of any kind.

 

Some of us hack things for fun, this was just one of my extending the
powers of my brain projects.

I think a forgery would be pretty easy to spot - a true glider's data plot
is erratic, but predictably so. 

The person who programmed the RF simulator would have to be able to
perfectly model a glider's position and altitude changes in a "thermal" ,
model the wind correctly and be highly detailed overall otherwise a
forgery would be easy to spot (especially if someone knew the conditions
of the day).

 

And if found, that person would never be allowed to launch in a
competition ever again, nor be able to log a record. Possibly not be
welcome in any club. You'd think with all the effort that would go into
creating a valid and undetectable plot, you could have used the money and
time to get in your glider and practice a little....
