I fail to see why any real importance is given to shell speed.
If you're only using bash interactively, you might not have seen it in
the cases where it mattered, but I have. When I got started with dash,
letting it take over from bash as my system shell for scripting, it was
solely because the speed improvement was so extremely noticeable even
without timing it, when simply booting the system, when running
configure scripts, in enough cases that it was worth the effort even if
it meant occasionally having to fix a script to remove bashisms.
Nowadays on modern computers the difference is not so easy to see, but I
do still remember that very well. If changes to get it to conform to
POSIX were to necessarily result in a slower shell than bash, which by
Jörg's estimate would be the case, I would not be spending time on it, I
would go back to bash.
