Peter,
Thanks for the comments; they are good ones.
Questions/Thoughts on the books:
1) Can we make the figures have chapter numbers instead of just
getting bigger. Like in the Getting started with Calc, could the first
figure be figure 7.1 instead of 66?
Yes, but it may be more hassle than it's worth. (I changed several
design elements for the full book from what I wanted to what worked
without hassle.) I'll have a try at the figure numbers. I agree that
would be an improvement.
Fair enough, I thought it was an easy button to push. When you are done,
I would be interested if you created a chapter or file called "How to
make a book." I suppose it would be the same as the master document
chapter, yea?
2) If someone were to print these out, would they look okay in black
and white? Has anyone tried?
Yes, I have printed some chapters in black-and-white and they do look
okay; quite good in fact.
Sweet, color printing is CRAZY expensive.
3) Can we add bookmarks to the PDF files or make the TOC hyperlinked?
Yes, for the "final" version I'll do that. I didn't this time because to
have bookmarks, I need to create the PDF from OOo1.9.X, which has some
problems with our files. Most of these problems can be solved by making
changes in the files, and I'm working on identifying and fixing those.
For example, many (most) callouts or other OOo drawing objects (lines,
circles, etc) added to screen captures move away from their intended
location, or go behind the screen capture; the cure for this is to put
the screen capture and all the associated callouts or drawing objects
into OOoDraw or GIMP or some other package, group them, and save or
export them as one graphic.
Should we do this when we make the callouts. I suppose it is too late
now, and eventually we will be editing in 2.0.
Are their issues filed? Should we file issues about this?
Some other problems may have to do with OOo itself; I'm not sure. One
problem is that a PDF created by 1.9.X is considerably larger than a PDF
created by 1.1.4; in the case of the Getting Started guide, it's a
difference between 7MB and >10MB. Linda says she knows how to make the
big PDF a lot smaller, but if that involves much work then it's not
worth her taking the time on drafts, which may change almost as often as
OOo1.9.X does.
Has this been reported? Do we know why?
Thanks,
