Why not take the individual chapter contents (.odt files) and simply reset them using new A4 page styles and reformat (update) everything? That should almost be a no-brainer.

It's not as simple as you think. Changing the page styles is easy, yes, but there is a lot more work involved in recreating a book from the individual chapter files. As I mentioned in a note to Leo, any time I make a change (no matter how minor) something seems to go wrong, so I have to check the whole book page by page.

For example, the Writer Guide has some nasty gremlins in it that make some cross-references wrong in a full book. The x-refs are correct in the individual files, but not when combined into a book. I don't know what causes this problem, so I don't know how to fix it. Yes, it has been reported. No, it is not only a problem in the Writer Guide, and not just in OOoAuthors books; others have seen the same problem on occasion.

All of that is why, after I created the 6x9 files for the printed book, I didn't take the time to make a book from the full-size pages, much as I would like to do so.
