By system freeze you mean kernel deadlock or just avifile stops
and everything else is working ?

If kernel gets into deadlock and you are using GeForce card with
NVidia driver you might have installed it improperly
(NVdriver kernel module is not matching your kernel or it's buggy)

Most probably - check other players if they work with XV extension rendering
(mplayer(xp), xine)

You could also switch to X11 renderer (but it'll be slower and more ugly)
(run avifile without movie and swith it in gui or edit ~/.avm/aviplay
line with:   use_yuv 0

avibench without options is using X11 rendering...

I assume that something wrong is with your new NVidia instalation -
so check if you have compiled NVdriver with correct header files
for your kernel and that all the files are at correct locations.
