Yes - but NVidia driver is very complex thing and nobody sees inside.
So they are using their NVdriver for a lot of things.

It's definitely not the responsibility of avifile that your machine
gets into deadlock - the is most usually kernel related bug - some
resource is being held (Assuming you have installed SMP version of
NVdriver)

You could try to compile single CPU kernel to see if the problem remains
also you could try to run   current kernel  with  'cpu=1' or 'nosmp' option
(could be passed as a kernel boot option - depends on your loader)

In all cases this is for sending bugreport to nvidia developers...
