In that case this is defintely fault of the Nvidia closed source driver
and shuold be reported - avifile has no power to deadlock your box.

So there is one explanation:

They have introduced some bug in mutlithreaded XFree processing - howerver
at this moment I'm unable to check their latest drivers on SMP box
with GeForce card...

Anyway you should definitely send a bugreport to nvidia and you might
try to install older version of their driver to see if this will help.

Another chance is I may commit my guiless less threaded testing player which
might probably work in such case - I'll see if it would be worth to
put this testing piece of code into something usable..
