No NVidia is not the one to blame. I have reconfigured
my X server to use the standard 'nv' driver. No
nvidia_drv.o anymore no NVIDIA kernel module (as lsmod reveiled)
I couldn't talk the kernel into sober booting with the 'nosmp' and/or 'cpu=1'
option but disabled the second cpu in the bios setup. so /proc/cpuinfo only
displayed 1 cpu
All of no avail .... :-(
