I commented out all the EternalInterface.AddCallback lines, and the movie displays with the normal map applied. This was a big clue, I'd forgotten that one of my external interfaces was resetting the sphere material. Opps! Sorry my mistake.
It is now working as I expected. Just got to get the normal map done properly in Prefab. Thanks for sticking with me, it has been a big help.
