Hey everyone, Let me start off by saying I'm new to away3d and 3d engines in general. So if I'm doing something that sounds unlogical to you, it probably is.
I'm trying to create a game with an isometric (orthogonal) view. For an example, look at CaféWorld. I have a Camera3D with an OrthogonalLens directed at an isometric plane, containing textures. First, I started by creating some tiles (grass.png, curb.png,road_egde.png,road_mid.png, etcetera.). I used an actionscript loop to create about 200 planes with 1x1 segments, and applied materials to them. This resulted in very bad performance, might have to do with the size I gave the tiles (100x100 in 3D, 120px by 120px png images), or perhaps away3d isn't made for showing that amount of planes. Next, I tried to create a bigger plane with one large texture on it. (Tiles already merged in photoshop to create the game environment). This resulted in a not-so-accurate render, I had to push the SegmentsW and SegmentsH properties up a bit. Now I've got this looking okay with 20x20 segments. But performance is slow again. This time, it's one 500x500 png wrapped over the plane. Is it normal that performance degrades this quickly, or am I doing something really wrong? Aside from that, I have no idea what some reasonable values for the size and position of the planes are, and for the zoom, focus and position of the camera. I play around with them, but maybe I end up with sizes that just impair performance..
