Hi!

if this is the regular Away3d (not lite) version, try something like:

thinginfront.ownCanvas=true;
thinginfront.screenZoffset(100);
thinginback.ownCanvas=true;
thinginback.screenZoffset(200);

The screenZoffset will force it to render in that certain distance order.
