Robin, I don't know. I haven't had to use California church records yet.
I was married in a Catholic church in Palo Alto and was not brought up Catholic. They wanted to know when and where my parents were born and if they were Catholic, where they were baptised and if I was not not baptised, why. They also required all this information on the witnesses. The marriage document the church provided had all this information on it. I would guess that it is also recorded in the diocese I recall some of our list members researched family at Mission San Jose, perhaps they have seen documents from this period and can enlighten us.
