Hi;

When my great grandfather died in 1909, leaving my ggrandmother with 4
children, she remarried within a year. The children, including my grandmother,
took their stepfather's last name as theirs. They even put the wrong name on
their marriage certificates until someone made them cross it out and write in
their birth last name. My guess is that someone knew the family story or
required their baptismal certificate. So, it's not unusual for kids to change
their names with stepparents. It happened to my grandfather too, when his
mother divorced and remarried.

As for the Social Security application, you can' get SS if you're not a citizen
can you? Or if you're not "legally" married to the man whom you state is your
husband. Maybe, she needed the money to survive and "fibbed".

So, I wouldn't be surprised about name inconsistency's if their are deaths of
the father or the mother.

P.S.: I live in San Luis Obispo, if I can help, let me know.l

Ronnie

Hi, From what my Grandmother Marie Holmes wrote it looks like Frank
Holmes was her Father and he was killed by someone or something and that is
when Isabel married Primo? Now I do not know if who you found is the right
people. I have searched the immigration records under the names you gave me
for the U.S. and could not find them. Elaine helped me and found them in the
census records and WWI and WWII draft registrations for the children. All the
death cert. for the boys (Frank, Joseph & John Holmes) stated that Frank Holmes
was their father and Isabel Enos or Enucina was their Mother. They also had
that they were born in Calif. Even my Grandmother Marie Holmes put on her
Social Security papers she was born in Oso Flaco, California. I know that is
not true as she told me she was born in Portugal. So I am not sure of anything
now? I am trying to find some of the childrens marriage certificates to see
what they say. Thank you for all your help. I really do appreciate any
advice. Let me know what you think? Vivian

Looking at the Rol de Confessados (Census), they are still
living there in 1884. In the 1890 they are not there. Isabel's mother died
March 1889. I believe Isabel emmigrated right after that
