Vivian:

If you are married to an American Citizen you don't automatically become a
Citizen. You must file for citizenship. The marriage may allow you to become
a citizen but the paper's must be filed. At least that is how I understand it.
The divorce may or may not have any effect.

Until 9-1-1 and sometimes during the War's no one was ever asked for proof of
citizenship, unless there was an interviewer who noticed an accent or suspected
something. I was never asked until after 9/11/01.

My guess is that there was probably some real or believed reason she would lie
about her age. My ggrandmother was 6 years older than her 2nd husband.
Perhaps, she had never told him or other's how old she really was.

Think about how complicated it would be for her to work if she didn't have a
SS#. And, she had to work, so she lied. No one checked anyway. In 1958, I
just filled out the form and sent it in. My SS card and the checks I receive
are still in the name of Ronnie, whereas, my birth certificate says I am
Veronica. I now have problems with the discrepancy as I travel. But, I was
named Veronica so that I could be called Ronnie and, that is who I am, Ronnie.
If someone called me Veronica, I probably wouldn't even answer.

Santa Maria and Guadalupe are in Santa Barbara county. Nipomo and Oso Flaco
Lake are in San Luis Obispo County. My husband says that years ago, the
boundaries changed several times. So, some of your relatives records may be in
Santa Barbara County. There is a small museum in Santa Maria. If you call the
Chamber of Commerce, the Museum is next door. I am sure you can get the phone
number. They may know more about the Oso Flaco area and what was going on
during the time in question. Santa Maria is still a farming community and
proud of it's history, someone should be able to either answer your questions
or refer you to someone who can answer your questions. Don't forget the Farm
Bureau of both counties, too.

My ggrandfather was born in Madeira, my ggrandmother in the Azores. The of the
family member's were born in Hawaii, except me and my brother. Those are other
stories.

I have found most of the family members that are close to me, but I am trying
to find the brother's and sister and their families', who are probably living
somewhere on the mainland now.

Ronnie

Hi Ronnie, When she file for a S.S.# back in 1938 she had been married
and divorced to my Grandfather who was a naturalized citizen. So I don't know
if back then you married someone who was a citizen you became one too?

I don't think they verified the information on the form. It says on
the form subject to later verification. She was way older then she said she
was on the form. She put her birth date as 5/31/1900 but she was actually born
in 1890 or 1894.

She filed for a S.S.# because to work you had to have one and she was a
live in Housekeeper/Cook/Babysitter in her later years of life. I am confused
by the fact that they said they were born in the U.S. but on the census records
it says they were Aliens born in Portugal.

About 15 yrs ago I went to the area where she said they rented a farm
in Oso Flaco, Ca. but Oso Flaco is just a road they lived on I don't think it
was a actual town. The towns were Guadalupe, Nipomo, Santa Maria and they were
in San Luis Obispo County. I went to San Luis Obispo to the County office to
see the maps of the area where she said they lived. My daughter and I drove out
to the road and talked to some of the people in the area. Never did find out
anything about them except that the store she says they went to was still there
in Guadalupe.

You would think that they would have taken the step fathers name of
Sousa unless they were told they could not.

Were your ggrandparents born in Portugal or the U.S.? Sounds like your
ggrandmother had her hands full after your ggrandfather passed away.

Thank you very much for the offer of help. That is very nice of you.
Have you been able to find all your relatives on your family?

I live in Poway, Ca. in the County of San Diego.

Thank you again, Vivian (Silva) Christy
