I always abbreviate in my own notes wherever I can....just because
they are my own and probably will only be seen by me. However, in my
data entry into my genealogy program, I use the long form and only
abbreviate USA. Such as .......Centerville, Alameda County,
California, USA. That way, folks from other countries will have a
clearer idea of what location I'm describing. I always add "County"
where appropriate so that it is clear the location described is a
county and not a city.......Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between
them.
