I once read in a Provincetown cookbook that every family has its own version.  
In fact,  a cousin recently starting adding split peas and simmering all day.  
I hate peas, but I have to admit her soup was good.  No one in my family ever 
added peas.  We of Azorean descent are simply an innovative crew.
