Your absolutely right. My mother made massa in batches every Christmas and Easter to give to everyone. I remember helping her, but never had the touch of making it myself. I tried, but it never comes out like hers or the way it should. Of course, she never measured anything so getting that down is hard enough so I kind of given up. I can still remember the smell of the bread when it rises the next day and ready to be put in the oven. I miss that.
It's sad that the blood gets thinner, but I know my eldest son still loves and looks forward to having some of the dishes, my youngest not so much. They have gone over to see my family there so I know that will be carried over to their families in mind and heart. It's kind of sad that the younger generation isn't really traditional anymore or at least as we were. I know it's the society with everyone moving around to other places makes it harder. What can you do. Kale soup is one of my most favorite out of all the wonderful things my grandmother taught me to make. I make it all the time. It's just so easy and delicious. If anyone wants the recipe, just let me know. Another favorite is the sweet bread. I make it every year at Christmas and Easter. The Sopas that is traditionally served at the Holy Ghost celebrations is also another favorite that I enjoy making. I think food is a wonderful way to stay in touch with our history. I try hard to keep the traditions going. Not just for my Portuguese side but I have to say that's the food I enjoy the most. As the generations continue, the blood gets thinner and thinner but if the love of the food can keep the appreciation of their heritage in their hearts, then it's worth the extra time and effort to make it. I just made Portuguese Kale Soup the other day. I remember having Soupas de Espirito Santo, when we would go to the religious feasts in my younger days held in Cambridge, New Bedford, Fall River, Ludlow, etc. It was a poor man's soup.
