Carol, In my experience on the Island of Sao Jorge, the priests wrote the posting of the banns in the margin of the woman's baptismal record. This is during the 1800's and later. I haven't seen it in the earlier records. I don't know if there was any special "book" where anymore info was recorded. It was great because you can search about three weeks forward from the date in the margin announcing the banns and you will find the marriage record under the "casamentos" records.
