My family covered up the fact that my father's side is Portuguese, for what
I suspect was intent to protect me from any possible discrimination, so
understandably I'm inclined to come down on the side of writing the full
truth. There may well be public records or journalistic accounts of events
in your family history, so if you know but omit those facts, your family
will trust your history less. Also, I strongly encourage the recording of
any and all illnesses that run in the family, for the benefit of present
and future generations, in case there's a hereditary component; consider,
e.g., the disproportionately high prevalence of Machado-Joseph Disease
among Azoreans. Katharine.
