And I have a different thought process :)
You've confirmed they were alive in 1930 and you know where they were living.
I'd start looking at the city directory for that city in 1930 and confirm at
which date they were no longer there: that will give you the next starting
point as opposed to blindly looking for them between all years in 1930-1940.

Gail E,

Search both Ancestry and Family Search for the 1940 census. Different entities,
different indexers.

There's 2 places to find the California Death Index online. One is VitalSearch,
a subscription site. Your local public library might have a subscription. The
other is on FamilySearch. Family Search is free. However, it's not fully
indexed. You'll have to go to CA records, then find the 1930s decade for the
death index, then click on that. Once you get to the Ds, you'll see about 800
images to go through. I'd type in image 100 and go up or down from there until
you hit the "Di" section then eventually Dias.

If you don't find them dying in the 1930s, then search the 1940-1997 CA Death
Index (also free from Family Search) to figure out when they died. If they died
after 1940, then you'll have to do some creative hunting to find them in the
1940 census.

Good luck,
