I agree that we should be as clear as possible when entering data. We just
can't tell what kind of pin heads will be around in 2113.

I am in the process of changing from FTM to TGM and have learned that if you
are not careful thing can get scrambled up when transferring data. I
currently break it down this way but am open for suggestions.

Detail - name of Church/Cemetery or other important location

City - Freguesia

County - Concelho

State - Island, Acores (i.e. Sao Miguel, Acores)

Country - Portugal

The real problem is dealing with the island. (or any other location that has
more the 4 jurisdictions real or geographical) When I think about how many
times on the Census it was written as people being from "Western Islands" or
"Azores" or "Portugal". That really told you a lot. They may as well have
said the Sea of Tranquility.

I know FTM will allow a comma separated location in a data field. So you
could have a string of information in one field. The problem is when you
export data to another program. The information ends up there but is
miss-labeled if you do not include everything. For example if you enter in
FTM "150 Palm Street, Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA" and export it
to GMT the fields will come out like this.

Address - Blank

Detail - 150 Palm Street

City - Attleboro

County - Bristol

State - Massachusetts

Country - USA

Another example is if you enter Attleboro, Massachusetts in FTM and export
it to GTM it will come out.

Address - Blank

Detail - Blank

City - Blank

County -Blank

State - Attleboro

Country - Massachusetts

I think you get the idea as far as problems in exporting data.

These are not problems that are difficult to overcome and can be batch
corrected getting them in the correct order in most cases.

The biggest problem is if you added a note in FTM along with the location.
For example if you entered in FTM a marriage location Attleboro, Bristol,
Massachusetts, USA and added in description Holy Ghost Church in Exporting
to TMG the description would come up in a note. Once exported the only way
to get the name of the church into the Detail box is to edit each instance
individually which can be very time consuming depending on the number to do.

Another thing I do not use abbreviations. AZ could mean Arizona or Azores.

Names are another problem but that is another discussion.
