I never thought there could be any way to criticize the way I wrote the names.
But I think it has more to do with your program.
For Brother's Keeper, there is a field that says simply "Location" and I can put anything I want there, no matter how long or no matter how many commas I use.
I don't think I would want to state the church when it comes to Portuguese locations. It gets too long.
Igreja de São Roque, São Roque, concelho de São Roque, ilha do Pico, distrito de Angra, Açores, Portugal, Europe, Planet Earth, etc.
I think my descendant would thank me I kept it as short as possible, but still clear. And when I say someone was baptized in São Roque, they know it was at the church.
But I do change my system when recording a baptism in a USA location.
St. Elizabeth Church, Sacramento, California
I don't also list USA. And I do abbreviate Saint. And I do abbreviate Nossa Senhora to NS. It becomes too long, otherwise. I don't say my grandfather was born in Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira, Açores. I say he was born in Conceição, Angra, Terceira, Açores.
And I do type with all possible accents. I don't type Conceicao. I type Conceição.
Yea, if there are set fields for location like town/city, state, country, then I can see there would be problems.
But as for Açores vs. Azores, I think my descendants will not be so stumped at that one. It might serve as an introduction to foreign place names.
I entered my marriage location as:
Bratislava, Slovensko
There are those who would suggest Slovakia, instead. But they call their country Slovensko.
I could write my grandmother was born in Mezoberény, Békés County, Hungary.
Or maybe I could write it as: Mezoberény, Békés Megye, Magyarország
But I just looked and I have it recorded as: Mezoberény, Békés Megye, Hungary
My reasoning was that Magyarország to my descendants might not be recognizable. I realize this is inconsistent.
So I have just now decided to convert places saying Hungary to Magyarország for the same reason as I use Slovensko.
I imagine all programs can convert names when you want to make changes and do it "globally."
I would hate to make changes to each separate entry. It would take a year.

But here's the thing, Doug...
When you are 6 feet under and someone has your genealogy and can't ask you the method for your madness, they will stand over your grave and curse you!
Sao Pedro, Angra, Terceria, Acores
Angra, Terceira, Acores
Doze Ribeiras, Terceira, Acores
So the year is 2113, I'm your descendant, and totally new to genealogy. I can't find Acores on any of my American maps, but may be able to figure out Azores (depending on the map). I can see the islands. So I can figure out Terceira (you still did not tell us where you type the island name).
But sometimes you use 3 fields and sometimes you use 4. If this is a print out, I'd be completely confused. I have no idea which one is a church, which one is a general location (concelho), and which one you mean the city field (freguesia).
So what to use where?
The city field seems obvious. Put the freguesia there. And country is obvious (Portugal). But what about the county and state fields? How should we be using those? And I have the Detail field where I separate the church (in the case where there's more than 1 church). For those without such a field, where do you type in the church?
