Hi Margaret, Are you referring to the parish of Sao Jose, in Ponta Delgada, or, the city of San Jose, in CA? The name Manuel de Paiva is of great interest to me since it is the name on many of my relatives. So too, does the name Ermelinda de Jesus. However, my relatives were from Ponta Garca. I did have a Great Uncle, named Joao de Paiva, that settled in Fall River approximately the time that you mentioned. He married a woman named Rosa de Lima - they had three children.
