Mara, Places of origin on manifests and passports don't always agree; they can also be troublesome on vital records, esp. in large cities with multiple parishes, such as Ponta Delgada. Sao Jose is located in the eastern end of Ponta Delgada, as I recall. Ermelinda's family may have lived in one of the small villages that border PD, such as Relva, or Arrifes, and had baptized her in Sao Jose. That could account for a different place of origin. As for the surname Paiva, unless they are the eldest, a son often carried the mother's surname. Ermelinda may have used, or was known by, more than one surname during various parts of her life. My GGA used the surnames Tavares, Costa, Leite, and Leite de Mendonca. I thought I had a branch of Paivas from PD, but, I can't locate them - so, it seems that I have more Paivas in Hawaii (36) than in PD. BTW, have you tried to find Manuel and/or his mother living in FR, on the Census? Also, if Manuel married in MA, that marriage record may be available online. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more help.
