Somewhere I remember reading a record Which went like this (Names made up.) Manoel filho de Jose de Arruda and Maria de Jesus mulher de Manoel de Sousa. That left no question what the situation was. I also remember reading a record that only listed the father's name and fathers parents nothing about the mother or her parents. Just when you think you have seen them all you find something different.
As others have said filho legitimate is if the couple are married and filho natural is if they were not married. An illigitimat child is one where the parents were not married to each other, nor could they be, since one or both were already married to somebody else. That is my understanding.
