OK, it may say that, but was someone there who saw the burial?  I'll note
it that way in my genealogy program but......

In my U.S. Census research, I've found people who are listed as "widowed"
and I've found the spouse living somewhere else.  Did they divorce?
Abandonment?  Saying someone was widowed sounded nicer and got more
sympathy, that's for sure.  Divorce and abandonment were probably reasons
to be shunned back then.

All speculation, of course,as you said.  I'll write what the record says.
