It is called an annulment. After a process of inquisition the church makes a determination that a valid marriage in the eyes of the church never took place. This can be for a number of reasons. In one case I was told by a Priest that sits on the Tribunal without giving any specific details that prior to getting married (sic) a man told his perspective bride that he would divorce her if she ever got fat like her mother. The marriage was annulled because he considered the marriage conditional prior to the ceremony. Over the years I have known a number of people that received an annulment. Annulments are more common today than they were years ago. Perhaps one of the most widely know annulments was the annulment that Ted Kennedy and his first wife received. At that time many said it was because he was rich and was a somewhat notable person. In truth most of the expense like stated below is to cover the cost of certified mailing and notarized statements.

I'll note it that way in my genealogy program but...... In my U.S. Census research, I've found people who are listed as "widowed" and I've found the spouse living somewhere else. Did they divorce? Abandonment? Saying someone was widowed sounded nicer and got more sympathy, that's for sure. Divorce and abandonment were probably reasons to be shunned back then. All speculation, of course,as you said. I'll write what the record says.
