OK the Catholic Curch didn't allow nor does it still allow divorced people to remarry (certain exceptions ?) unles the previous spouse ha died. Actualy even in our informed society (?) they still are. Hermano, OK, it may say that, but was someone there who saw the burial? I'll note it that way in my genealogy program but...... In my U.S. Census research, I've found people who are listed as "widowed" and I've found the spouse living somewhere else. Did they divorce? Abandonment? Saying someone was widowed sounded nicer and got more sympathy, that's for sure. Divorce and abandonment were probably reasons to be shunned back then. All speculation, of course,as you said.
