Regarding my previous comment of "Apelido" interpretation of it being a nick, it seems this is not correct. After reading the introduction, it is my understanding this book is the book of surnames/apelidos Portuguese and incomplete due to the death of the writer. He refers to the various origins as he finds them and how he identifies them in this book. «Prefacio dos appellidos». «Eu dou os appellidos como os encontro em voga, por vezes deturpados e com diversas formas, verbi gratia, Braun, Brown, Brum, Brun e Bruno ; Espregueira por Espargueira, horta de es- pargos ; Barbosa por Barboso; Peixoto por Peixota, pescada; Ferreira por Ferreiro ; Barreto por Barrete ; Themudo por Temi- do;» Nem esse período ficou concluído. N'uma nota solta, manda ver sobre appellidos portuguezes o Portugal Antigo e Moderno, vol. 4.°, pag. 486. E n'uma carta a um amigo diz : «Quanto ao meu Diccionario d' Appellidos, as estrelinhas querem dizer que o appellido é nome d'um santo ; as cruzes que- rem dizer que o appellido é nome de povoação nossa; o itálico por seu turno quer dizer que o appellido é de importação estran- geira, vindo da França ou da Itália, da Allemanha ou da Ingla- terra, da Suécia ou Noruega, etc. «Isto deve dizer-se no Prefacio. «Eu podia dar a etymologia de grande numero de appel- lidos, mormente dos tirados de nomes de santos e das nossas povoações, mas ficaria o trabalho muito longo, teria muitas la- cunas, principalmente com relação aos appellidos estrangeiros e na minha pobre Tentativa Ety^nologica teria de repetir muitas das etymologias de nomes de terras. «Se Deus me prolongar a vida e as forças para concluir o pobre Diccionario, eu em tópico especial, no fim d'elle, darei a etymologia de muitas das nossas povoações que figuram no Diccionario como appellidos».
