The rendering “in its place” comes from a textual emendation, עַל־כַּנּוֹ, a phrase that also appears in 11:38. The early versions have “on the temple” (ἐπὶ τὸ ἱερὸν ; et in templo).

Among the translations of these words I have seen are "in its place" ("in its place a desolating abomination comes..." [Lexham English Bible]) and "upon the wing [i.e., of the temple]" (upon the wing [of the temple] shall be an Abomination-Apalling" [Montgomery's commentary on the book of Daniel]).
