This illustrates the point. Neither tribal nor feudal society (they
are different) has such an extensive differentiation of sub-worlds in
which different rules apply. There are tribes in the lunch-room, sure
-- but these are tribes that are left behind and count for nothing in
economic life, in science, in gaming. Tribal life doesn't have this
differentiation to anything like the same extent. There may be
different spheres with different rules within the tribe, for instant
for men and for women, but there are only a few times at which one
person enters a different sphere, functions in it under different
rules, and then leaves it. But we do this every day in postmodern
society: we have our work-world and our politics-world and our
religion-world, the science-world perhaps, and in each of these we
have a different membership and function differently by different
rules, with different kinds of "knowing" being applicable.
Sure, the canteen may be "tribal," the work environment may be
"feudal" (or may not), but this limited and optional 'tribalism' or
'feudalism' is not at all like a society built on a tribal or feudal
principle that embraces all aspects of life
