If you read "Against Method"(in any of its versions) - and you will see that
"anything goes" is exactly what Feyerabend means: it fits in with the kind
of ideas he tries to purvey. Later emendations don't change the basic
message.
" Thus, while an American can now choose the religion he likes, he is still
not permitted to demand that his children learn magic rather than science at
school." ("Against Method")
" While the parents of a six-year-old child can decide to have him
instructed in the rudiments of Protestantism, or in the rudiments of the
Jewish faith, or to omit religious instruction altogether, they do not have
a similar freedom in the case of the sciences. Physics, astronomy, history
must be learned. They cannot be replaced by magic, astrology, or by a study
of legends." ("Against Method")
These are good illustrations of "anything goes" which he says is "the only
principle that does not inhibit progress". (This is self-refutational: how
can we talk of progress and improvement when 'anything goes'?)
The quotes are not there to indicate he doesn't mean it but rather to set
apart a statement of motto or guidance from the rest of the sentence.
