:"You mean, you thought it would sound good to reinforce your argument,
as a handy stick to hit the relativists with, so you just made it up?
It doesn't make for a very credible critique of relativism
Sen"
well... yes. has anyone noticed that all they can, relatively speaking, do is
look for patterns that reinforce already held views??
and then test them?
"relativism" being an "ism" is inherently false. relativity--the sne se that
one wishes to act as if things "are" relative is a reality.
going baxck to the start of this thread, there was a cite from a paper that in
my reading syas the "good" of the 20th century was it giving concrete proof to
the failure of "isms". imho the -isms that result in genocide probably fit
nicely in that category. and being "fitting", are "right for them." as said,
the wolf is not insulting the herd, he is honouring the grass.
:"You mean, you thought it would sound good to reinforce your argument,
as a handy stick to hit the relativists with, so you just made it up? "
actuallly i'm not the one who made it up. and if ur following the trendlines
here, me being the one who is saying that relativistic thinking needs be
relativistic in its application, and having concretely footnoted derrida saying
so in on grammatology, and having said that absolute relativism, or a manual
for what reltivism is or isn't is a straw man, i would possibly be more
functionallly relativistic than u are allowing for.
:"here are tribes in the lunch-room, sure
-- but these are tribes that are left behind and count for nothing in
economic life, in science, in gaming."
that's ur rather narrowed cultural perception as a member of an "us" that
re-aligned tribal affiliations and strategies until u had a degree, and could,
in the terms of the now sit at this campfire with peers and discuss the meaning
of "the good" for others..rather feudalistic...no?
and everyone in the meadhall is having a rousing good time chewing on and
fighting over the carcasses of derrida or foucalt and sans the UHJ noting it,
there is no grendel.
:"different kinds of "knowing" being applicable"
becuase? ooo ..somebody decided to act, reflected, moved, reflected, and
imposed "rules" by which acceptance into the recognised tribe could be granted.
i recall u*i talking about tribal rules inre the meaning of words like
theologian et al at bnut as measured against the rules of an uttterly
hypothetical tribe, the "general reader". and the confusion of interpretiung
signals that might result, and my theory that u were entitled to not be a
picked over carcass in somebody else's mead hall.
:"but this limited and optional 'tribalism' or
'feudalism' is not at all like a society built on a tribal or feudal
principle that embraces all aspects of life"
uhhuh..which has no relationship at all to what i said...which is that there
is a concrete struggle to determine whether external pressure--the model u seem
to be talking about--can prevail over internal generation ( i refer u to an
obscure paper by piaget about children;s games changing rules by geography,
time, and the will to power of the alphas in the local pack of children in
france or some such place).
so far as it being "optional"--there are untold numbers of library shelves in
the pscyh, anthro, soc and harlequin romance sections allll affirming that for
human beings, there is no inherent option to be tribal. it's a need.
a need felt by the people who matter. and i refer you back to Y2K Message. a
need generally numbed by people being told "how things are"---as if anyone
could know, other than the Blessed Beauty.
