Regarding that the idea that cultural relativism leads to things like
the Rwandan genocide... I think that one can and should distinguish
between the temporary "insanity" which sometimes overcomes a
particular society, and the longer lasting values which are more
deeply imbedded in the civilization. For many such examples, Rwandan
genocide, the Nazi Holocaust, the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge, etc.
there would still be many individuals and groups who would reject what
was happening as wrong and disapprove of what was happening. Having
anger, fear, hatred, resentment or bigotry swell up in a society to
the point that the individuals are moved to do things which are still
considered wrong by most of the people most of the time, is different
from a genuine paradigm shift.
