The Baha'i Studies Listserv Dear Matt, What happened at Karbila has the same significance for Shi'ite Muslims as the crucifixion has for Christianity. They cannot just 'get over it' without fundamentally changing what they are.
I think that history is important to us as Baha'is especially in terms of our understanding of the Covenant. However, I try to avoid the differences between Shi'ites and Sunnis when it comes to most other matters, especially jurisprudence. In this regard Baha'u'llah wrote in the Tabernacle of Unity: "The founder of the principles of Islamic jurisprudence was Abu-Ḥanifih, who was a prominent leader of the Sunnis. Such principles had existed in former times as well, as hath already been mentioned. In this day, however, the approval or rejection of all things dependeth wholly upon the Word of God. These differences are not worthy of mention. The eye of divine mercy casteth its glance upon all that is past. It behoveth us to mention them only in favourable terms, for they do not contradict that which is essential." warmest, Susan __________________________________________________ You are subscribed to Baha'i Studies as: mailto:[email protected] Unsubscribe: send a blank email to mailto:leave-534877-27401.54f46e81b66496c9909bcdc2f7987...@list.jccc.edu Subscribe: send subscribe bahai-st in the message body to [email protected] Or subscribe: http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/all_forums/subscribe?name=bahai-st Baha'i Studies is available through the following: Mail - mailto:[email protected] Web - http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/?forum=bahai-st News (on-campus only) - news://list.jccc.edu/bahai-st Old Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] New Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]
