More specifically, it was the Bab's birthday. The Bab was born on the
first day of Muharram while Baha'u'llah was born on the second day.

Muawiyyih's rebellion had nothing to do with preferring a council of
elders (or he would have appointed one himself instead of passing the
throne down to his son) nor was motivated by a desire to preserve
Monotheism (that was the justification Muhammad Ali gave for rebelling
against 'Abdu'l-Baha.) He rebelled against Ali for Ali's refusal to
exact revenge on those responsible for death of 'Uthman. In other
words, it was a blood feud.

It should be noted that the Shi'ites will later do the same thing with
'Umar and Abu Bakr. Bad precedent.

> I would never think that Sunnis are pro-killing Hussein.

It should be noted that the martyrdom of Husayn was upsetting enough
that it helped spark the rebellion that eventually led to the
overthrow of the Umayyads by the Abassids. However, the line between
Shi'ite and Sunni was not clearly drawn yet.
